Had to wait until the evening for assistance, but finally managed to get the front axle assembly free of the car today.
There were still a handful of small bolts holding the assembly to the aluminum panels that make up the sides of the engine bay. Removed them and the assembly became free. Had to prize the final portion of the steering shaft from the universal joint since the helical portion is wedged into the steering rack. This isn't too surprising given the bend in the steering rack but because I didn't take the equivalent stub from the Cortina is Wrexham I have to hope that it can be salvaged, or I've got to make another trip to Wrexham.
