July 15th 2004 - Grinding

Ground down the weld on the top suspension mount prior to re-welding it to a fresh diagonal piece. Got the fear and decided to hold out until I could line everything up on the car to ensure that it is in the right place.

Drilled 12mm holes in the 7mm strip that will make up the new lower mounting tabs,

The problem with the welding is that I'm just plain scared of it, which is why it has been deferred and deferred. To be honest, I know that it isn't going to be that bad, it's just convincing myself and also making sure that all of the relevant tools are in the correct place at the right time. Essentially, one has to draw a line under it and say that it's next week or never. It still won't get me on tour, but at least it should be back on it's wheels which is an all important milestone.

Worried about the steering. Suspect that the pinion from the rack and pinion steering system might be bent in which case I'll have to source a fresh item but it could prove tricky. Need to take the column in at the weekend and cut the housing away to release the ball race and pinion.
