First job of the morning was to top coat the chasis with two coats of chasis black paint. With some spare paint the square washers and the underside of the sub-frame were also given coats.
With a bit of effort was able to release the track rod ends from the spare axle that I have. Added these to the ends of the steering rack that is assembled onto the sub-frame. Couldn't attatch the track rod ends to the stub axle because without any weight on the suspension the stub axles are too low to get the rod ends into the relevant holes.
Whilst the paint is drying a trip down the high street to Halfords to pick up grease, anti-freeze and radiator sealant. The radiator will have to be replaced eventually, but it will be usefull to have it runnable in the short term.
With the paint "almost" dry lifted the front sub-frame up onto the mounting tabs and gently hammered it into place on the diagonals. Couldn't get the steering column to fit onto the rack, so removed both the rack and steering column to work on them separately. Used a screwdriver to prise the collar of the steering apart allowing it to slip over the pinion shaft on the rack with reasonable ease.
Moved the front hoop and radiator back into place and attatched it loosely to the sub-frame. I'm loathe to fix it any more securely until I've had a chance to offer both the nose cone and bonnet halves up to the build. Both of these attatch to the hoop at the very top.
Took a look at the alternator bracket. Removed it to straighten out the two mounting tabs that were bent. Packed out the back with washers in order to correct for the fact that the main support tube has been slightly bent. Reassembled the alternator back onto the bracket and offered up the belt. Pulled the alternator up to it's maximum adjustment and tightened all of the bolts. Slightly concerned that the belt feels somewhat loose. Will need to keep an eye on this and swap to a slightly smaller belt if necessary.
Various thoughts about the stabiliser bar supports. The lower section that contains the welded on plate is undamaged. By making a long diagonal cut across the support and welding on a fresh section. It will then be possible to strap it to the undamaged passenger support and using the undamage supports hole as a guide drill the top mounting hole. Cutting to length should be simple. This method will eliminates any difficult drilling and tapping to recreate the stabiliser bar support. As long as the cut is long the weld should be fine, especially since it will be accessible because it's a free piece.
Finally located a replacement Cibie drivers lamp at Demon Tweaks. Need to go back to the surviving lamp and work out what flavour of lamp it is. I think it's an Oscar Driving lamp, but which of the 4 variants is unclear.
