Decided to start on the bodywork. Started by dimantling the old wing and taking a good look at the various bits that are attached to it. Of note is the strengthening rib that has been added behind the wheel arch to support the vertical part of the running board and stop it flapping around, and there is a sizeable built up area perhaps an inch deep towards the back of the wing that doesn't exist on the new wing.
Offered the wing up to the car using the lip where the bonnet fits as a key fitting point. Somewhat amused to find that the wing is an inch short where it fits up to the rear wheel arch, this explains the built up area at the back of the old wing. After deciding that building up an extra inch from scratch would not be fun I took a hacksaw to the old wing, removed the last inch from the back. Both the new wing and the extension piece were deeply scored to give the fibreglass resin something to bond into and the two pieces were glued together using fibreglass.Dismantled the stainless steel plate on the front of the nosecone to allow access to the damaged area. Mixed up a batch of P38 easy sand to fill in a couple of pits on the passenger side wing, the damaged area of the nosecone and the join between the extension piece and the wing.
Mixed up a real batch of resin, soaked a length of hemp rope and laid it out across the inside of the wing behind the wheel arch to provide stiffening there. Slightly annoyed when I realised that my tub of chopped glass strands has been left in Imperial, which means I wasted half a batch of resin and won't be able to progress again until Tuesday when I head into Imperial.
The rubber bushes arrived in the post. When I head into Imperial on Tuesday I'll have to take the rubber bush and stabiliser bar in with me in order to press it into place with the bench vice.
