Finally a day when it isn't scheduled to rain. Finished of the fitting of the drivers side bonnet. Carefully taking a sliver off at a time, this one appears to reach the wing a lot better than the passenger side bonnet did. Decided that I would have to put the rubber in place to get the fit perfect.
Loosened of the wing and stuffed the rubber into place. Also realised that the very top of the engine bay side wall needs to be bent inwards so that it doesn't foul the bonnet. Used an adjustable spanner to gently ease the steel over. The bonnet no longer catches on the strip and is sitting nicely against the rubber that had just been fitted.
Still a bit unhappy with the fit around the scuttle, the curve of the bonnet is slightly larger than the curve of the scuttle which creates a gap. I'm unsure how to correct this, short of unbending and then rebending the bonnet around the scuttle. Such a manouver has every liklihood of going wrong probably when the bonnet fails to curve smoothly.
Took the steering linkage apart to try and get the steering wheel level when the car is running straight. It took a bit of effort to get the splined end back together but the steering wheel is now level when driving straight.
Off up the road for a quick test drive, there were two immediately obvious problems. Something, possibly on the passenger, side is making a graunching noise when going over the speed humps at thte end of the road. Need to check the suspension on that side. Secondly, more worryingly, there is a vibration through the steering wheel, which I don't recall being there last time I took the car out for a drive. The vibration appears to be linked to the wheels, in that it gets faster and slower as the car speeds up and slows down. Could be bearings or brakes, will need to jack the car up and spin the wheels by hand to see if I can work out what the cause of the problem is.
